Herencia: Celebrando Juntos

Congratulations to all the artist!!

When Anahi (Divine Purls) invited me to be part of this show, I knew it was going to be something special. She’s someone I truly trust, thoughtful, caring, and patient. This was her very first time curating an art show, and let me just say… she’s amazing at it.

I first met Anahi at a Bronx Council on the Arts event, introduced by Alexis Marie Montoya (who is also one of the featured artists in the show). Beyond curating, Anahi also runs a free crochet club called Skein Queens, supported entirely by community and donations. Why mention this? Because it’s all about community. Anahi has been building this space slowly, genuinely, with so much heart. Together with her partner, David, through late nights, sweat, and love, they’ve created something truly beautiful.

Fun raffles!

That sense of hard work and community radiated throughout the opening reception. Family, friends, and even people just passing by all came together to celebrate and share stories of our Latin culture. My favorite part was listening to everyone’s stories and realizing how much people connected with the meaning behind my art. It warmed my heart.

My submission: “Hilda la bailarina” 2025: Mixed medium, gouache, watercolor, color pencil, paper cutouts.

It’s powerful to think about everything our ancestors endured, and how their resilience allows us to be here today, celebrating our vibrant culture, history, and each other. This show isn’t just a show. It’s a gentle hug, a warm embrace, a reminder of the magnificence of community and who we are as a people.

This all wouldn’t happen without the support of the community, so please check out every artist who is part of this show. Give them a follow, share their work, and maybe even ask about their pieces. Supporting one another is how we keep this circle alive.

Thank you to Anahi, David, and the team at Daisy Juice Bar Café for giving us this opportunity to celebrate ourselves, to honor those who came before us, and to let our laughter and joy ripple into other realms. Our talent, in itself, is a form of resistance.

The show will be up until October 25th, which is also the date of the closing reception (free tickets are now available!). And while you’re there, please support Daisy Juice Bar Café. They were incredible hosts, made the entire experience feel like home, and trust me, the food is delicious and the coffee is bomb.
